No-knead bread petits pains baked in a steamy oven
I am not one to judge people's eating habits, which in this country are varied and ever changing. Having been a vegetarian family for over 8 years we generally keep a low profile and try not to discuss it too much. No one likes a pushy eater. I very rarely get a lecture about what we choose to to put in our mouth, except when we visit friends and family in France, then the gloves come off, as only Europeans can. No matter that they are drinking oodles of wine while lecturing you on your strangeness, you should listen and take it quietly. My favorite is the argument "Hitler was vegetarian!". What about Gandhi I want to fight back? Not worth it. Anyway, I seem to remember that citing Hitler as your point means you have lost the conversation.
One trend that I can never wrap my head around is the assault against bread/grain product. It reminds me of my college years during which Atkins reined king. Bacon, bacon more bacon! Unless of course you suffer from Celiac disease I don't see how you can pass up on the joy of bread. Crispy, fragrant bread...
When I bake bread I know everyone's day is looking up. It is the promise of tomato sandwiches for lunch, something unique to our house, no two cooks' loaves taste exactly the same. Of course bread can make you fat, but I wonder if maybe it is the butter and the cheese's fault more than the grain. Not being a clairvoyant I'll never know, but I plan on eating bread as baguettes, loaves and pizza happily ever after.
