My pediatrician suggested I feed Finn some added fat content in order to slow down his over enthusiastic bowel. I tried cheese at first with very moderate success, it's always hard to decide how much was eaten versus how much ended up on the floor. He then suggested cooked coconut milk. Adding it to the frozen cubes of fruits and veggies before zapping them in the microwave yielded good results. I wonder now if it would be possible to make it part of his morning oatmeal... I bet it would work great. Weird to be adding more fat everywhere though!

I took a few notes myself. I especially like vegetable curry. I have a baby that won't eat meat, not even chicken! I sware he's not my kid.

I'm weaning my year-old son and am going to add coconut milk to his diet for the fat + additional health benefits. I googled "coconut milk and babies" and found your blog. I love it!

I blend coconut milk (or any kind of milk) with ripe/overripe bananas and carob powder, and sometimes some ground flax too, and put it in the icecream maker. Svara loves it! If you don't have an icecream maker simply start with frozen bananas and you'll end up with instant soft icecream. Oh, you can also use avacado as part of the "icecream" base.

Unfortunately Coconut Milk contains mostly saturated fats...it is okay to use a few times a week but should not be used exclusively. Mashed avocados, finely ground flax seeds are terrific containing Omega 3 (essential fatty acids) and can easily be sprinkled lightly on top of anything you are already feeding him. You could even try adding very small amounts of olive oil to his morning cereal...I know it sounds gross but like avocados it contains only monounsaturated fats therefore making it a much healthier source of fat than coconut milk.

Over-enthusiastic bowel? That sounds like my boy! I hadn't heard of trying coconut milk to help with that. We're going to have to give it a try for sure. Thanks for the tip! :)

So excited to find your blog! My husband and I are expecting our first child any day now and while we aren't vegans we are all about organic gardening/farming and only putting what's best for Baby in our bodies and his/hers.
Your recipes and advice have been a real treat this afternoon! Can't wait to see what else is in store!
And, LOVE LOVE LOVE your sewing blog. My sister and cousin's wife are pregnant also, so the bib/blanket/burp cloth patterns will be perfect to add to the few other items I have in their 'homemade goodies' shower bags!

Avocado is an easy way to add some fats. Kids love it and it requires no preparation. When he's a little older you can simply cut it in half, remove the seed, give him a spoon and let him go for it!

Do you use fresh coconuts or canned?
I need ideas bad!

Hi! I just found your blog via Whip-Up. I have a 9 month-old and have been making all his food. I agree--good baby food is expensive, and I want to know what is going into that little body! I recently found a recipe that uses coconut milk and was super easy... Mix 1 cup rice, 1 can coconut milk, 1 cup chunky applesauce (I used steamed apple pieces), and 1 cupe frozen cherries (I used blueberries and cranberries because they were already in my freezer). Put it in a baking dish, cover, and bake at 325 for an hour. Warning: it looks terrible! It's mushy blue rice, but it tastes great and is healthy. :) Unfortunately, this week my son only wants to eat food he can feed himself, and he hasn't mastered the spoon quite yet.
I love that your recipes are for baby and parents--that's awesome! Our son loves to eat whatever is on our plates, even if he's just consumed a full meal of his own food. I want to encourage him to eat everything, so I guess that's good. :) I'll definitely be checking back. Happy cooking, crafting, and "momming".

I love that you are making all your own baby food. I also did this for Ollie and it felt great that I knew only goodness was going into my little man! Finn seems to be loving mummy's meals! What about coconut with peaches and fullfat yoghurt? yum

Isn't coconut good for lots of other things too? Seems a very healthy thing for a baby. I'm going to have to remember this one. It's so nice that Finn is a few months older than Brice, I really get good advice a little in advance. I'm glad you talked about the yougurt. My little guy LOVES the peach Yo Baby. Today i'm going to mix our own peach yogurt with their regular whole milk yogurt and mushed peaches.
